You can’t price yourself out of racism – Gabrielle Union

I came across this today.

Gabrielle Union talks about how no matter how rich or famous you are, you cannot escape racism or sexism.

“I think people have this idea that you can price yourself out of isms. For a lot of the public, the idea that celebrity means you don’t experience racism, you don’t experience sexism, you don’t experience homophobia, you couldn’t experience transphobia and that’s not true.”

“You don’t have the luxury of walking down our street that’s not very well lit in a ‘Stand Your Ground’ state, and in an open-carry state, ’cause our neighbors can kill you and they can get away with it, cause all they have to say is I was threatened… by your unarmed- body, black body”

Pricing Yourself Out of Racism

All the money in the world can't prevent you from experiencing racism.Listen to these wise words by Gabrielle Union:

Eloquently said. I would add that sometimes celebrities do get a pass because they are well known.

When you live in certain neighborhoods, it can also be easy to be lulled into thinking that things are getting better for everybody, because you don’t see racism or perhaps other isms  as often as you used to. You never totally escape it though, because for as long as it exists in the world, it will catch up with you.

The way to escape it is to fix it and this sort of thing takes generations to fix. The best our generation can do is to do its bit.
